Verse (of a song)

What about ‘verse’ — I wondered if there’s a Manding term for that?

Hi, Odhrán! I was looking up a word in the Bamadaba dictionary yesterday and stumbled across:

tɛ́rɛmɛ vt.

to sing (the verses, solo)
chanter (les couplets, en solo)

Ɲele bɛ dɔnkili tɛrɛmɛ.
Ɲele sings the verses.
C’est Ɲele qui chante les couplets.

And, I’m guessing “tɛ́rɛmɛ” can also be used for “stanza”. :slightly_smiling_face:

:v:t5:

Very interesting! Good find, @Christy!

I would point out that this tɛrɛmɛ is actually not a distinct word from tɛrɛmɛ (lit. “to bargain over sth”) in the AKT dictionary. It’s listed by Bamadaba as a special “sense” of the word — I’m guessing one that is special to the jargon of music/singing. I’ve never heard it used this way. Curious if others have!

In terms of using the verb to get a noun for “stanza” or “verse”, I guess we could envision something like:

tɛrɛmɛli
