Imagine

How do I invite someone to imagine a hypothetical scene, or while listening to a story, understand how ridiculous/exceptional the story is.

“Imagine, among all these people, you are the one they chose!”
or
“Imagine, a grown man acting out like a child!”

Google translate and glosbe propose:

  • Miiri k’a filɛ
  • I hakili to a la

Can anyone say it better, or are these the only options?

I ni ce, @Irene ! Good question.

I don’t think that the options from Google or Glosbe are appropriate.

This use of Imagine as an exclamation that introduces something that someone should see in their mind (and potentially find it exceptional) strikes me as a little bit particular and not something that has a good one-to-one translation into Bambara/Jula.

If you really want to use a verb in a similar way, how about using the verb bisigi and an optative construction with ka:

I k’à bisigi ko…

“(You should) Imagine that…”

Otherwise, I think you could probably use the noun kabako in your examples. For instance:

Cɛkɔrɔba bɛ kuma i ko denmisɛn. Kabako tɛ?

Or:

Kabako tɛ? Cɛkɔrɔba bɛ kuma i ko denmisɛn!

Or simply as an exclamation:

Kabako! Cɛkɔrɔba kɛ kuma i ko denmisɛn!
