The verb you are looking for is actually sonya or sonyɛ meaning ‘to steal’ (see also, son/nson ‘thief’).
Local pronunciation in many parts of Mali has actually become something that sounds like shuwɛn, but generally the standard written form is the fuller one.
In Jula (and Maninka), everyone generally says sonya.
